Jones' rep told Us Weekly the musician died "of a heart attack" at Martin Memorial Hospital in his hometown of Indiantown, Florida. The 1960s pop idol is survived by his wife Jessica and four daughters from previous relationships.
"It is with great sadness that I reflect on the sudden passing of my long-time friend and fellow-adventurer, David Jones," Jones' Monkees bandmate Peter Tork, 70, tells Entertainment Weekly in a statement. "His talent will be much missed; his gifts will be with us always. My deepest sympathy to Jessica and the rest of his family."
Footloose star Kevin Bacon, 53, expressed his sadness via Twitter Wednesday, writing: When I was a kid I wanted to be Davy Jones. Big part of what led me to showbiz. R.I.P."
Echoed ABC Family actress Melissa Joan Hart, 35: "I'm so saddened by the news that Davy Jones has passed away! I used to watch The Monkees after school on Nick everyday!"
Neil Diamond, 71, tweeted that he was "sad to hear" about Jones' passing. "The Monkees were such a sensation that it was a thrill for me to have them record some of my early songs."
